how it works
-
work and take breaks
a timer in your menu bar counts down 25 minutes. at zero, the meadow takes over your screen.
-
earn rewards
stay until the end to earn vitamin D. catch a butterfly for extra.
-
upgrade your meadow
spend it on upgrades you can see. flowers, a lantern, a hot air balloon.
-
unlock new biomes
new places to take your breaks in. a wheat field, to begin with.
also on your iPhone
the same meadow on your phone, on its own or linked to your mac.
-
one account
sign in on both and they share one meadow. what you earn on one is on the other.
-
phone down
start focus on your mac and your phone joins in. leave it be until your break.
-
extra rewards
take your phone outside. time in the real sun pays extra vitamin D.

hi, i’m jeroen
i spend most of my days behind a screen. you probably do too.
touch grass started as a joke: a website where you can touch grass… digitally.
i posted it on x, it went viral, and the reply i got most was people asking for a link.
so i kept going. now it’s becoming an app that makes you want your breaks, and actually helps you go outside.

what is touch grass for?
to make you want your breaks. touch grass is a pomodoro timer for your mac: you work, the timer runs out, and a meadow takes over your screen for a few minutes. the more breaks you take, the more it grows.
what does “touch grass” mean?
it’s what the internet tells you when you’ve been at a screen too long: go outside, touch some grass. this app takes that a little too literally.
what should i do during a pomodoro break?
anything that isn’t work, and isn’t another feed. look away from what you were doing, breathe, move a little. touch grass gives you a meadow to look at and play with until the break is over.
does looking at nature on a screen actually help?
a little, yes. in a 2015 study at the university of melbourne, 150 students did a dull attention task with a 40-second break in the middle. half looked at a picture of a roof covered in a flowering meadow, half at bare concrete. the meadow group made fewer mistakes afterwards. the study
can i skip a break?
yes. you just miss the vitamin d that break would have paid. nothing is taken away.
what if a break comes at a bad moment?
you get a heads-up before it starts, and “5 more minutes” puts it off. while you’re on a call it waits by itself.
does it watch what i do?
no. it never records your screen, your keys or your websites, and it asks for no permissions. it only notes which app is in front and for how long, and you can turn that off. no account needed. if you sign in to link your iPhone, only your meadow’s progress is shared.
is it free?
yes. touch grass is free to download for your mac and your iPhone. paid extras are coming later.
what does beta mean?
that touch grass isn’t finished yet. it works, but things will still change, and something may break now and then.
do i still have to go outside?
yes. this is for the other eight hours.
